What Legacy Are You Leaving?

As he highlights many people who had a great impact on the rebuilding of South Sudan, Paul Deng Joshua Leek also talks about other leaders in his book.

“What legacy are you going to leave for history so that you are remembered for the good that you did?” He asks. “Nelson Mandela, Lee Kuan Yew, Jesus Christ, Mahatma Gandhi and Mother Teresa all left a historical mark that keeps being emulated from generation to generation because each of them had aspects of being a good politician.

Lee Kuan Yew of Singapore realized that the key to a strong developed nation was strong families. He ensured that he included in the national curriculum, teachings on the importance of a proper family set-up.

He personally led an exemplary family lifestyle. He was present to take care of his children and wife even though he was president. He mentored his own children and encouraged others to do the same. He prayed with them, took time to play with them and to be involved in their growth.

He had taught his nation to have a vision for their families before they even got married. They had to make a written vision of exactly how they planned to live, how they would educate their children, how many children they would have, and how they would be present in their children’s lives.

They had a plan of how they could cater for their children and even when anything happened to the parents, how to have insurances that would make the family comfortable.

Today, Singapore is one of the most admirable countries with very strong family values.”

What legacy are you leaving for your family and for your country? What are you doing with what you have in your hands?
